Rainbow Snake
2023, monoprint on paper, watercolor, resin, plywood, spraypaint, 23” x 45”
I wanted to create one continuous image spanning across four prints. A snake felt like the perfect subject—not only could it twist and flow across the pages, but it also holds deep personal symbolism for me.
Born in 2001, I am a Metal Snake in the Chinese zodiac. According to tradition, Metal Snakes are analytical, ambitious, and driven—traits that align with my Capricorn nature as well. While I don’t take astrology too seriously, I often find encouragement in these descriptions, so this print became a form of self-expression and self-love.
For the color palette, I gravitated toward bright colors, fun patterns, and a fluid watercolor and gouache effect. Once I completed the first monoprint, I realized the snake was unmistakably rainbow. This reminded me of the Rainbow Serpent, a key figure in Australian Aboriginal mythology. Revered as both a creator and destroyer, the Rainbow Serpent governs water, fertility, and balance, themes that resonated with my own artistic journey.
To display the prints together, I opted for a plywood board rather than a massive frame. I found the perfect board at SCRAP, primed and spray-painted it, then adhered the prints with spray adhesive before sealing them with clear epoxy resin. While I love the glossy, polished finish, I wish I had been more patient during adhesion, as some edges lifted slightly.
Despite minor setbacks, I’m really happy with how the prints and display turned out. This piece feels like a vibrant self-portrait—representing my creative, ambitious, and ever-evolving spirit.
