Hebikera on Green Fabric
2023, screen print on fabric, 14.5” x 11”
This five-layer hand-screen print is inspired by the Hebikera creature from the Miyazaki film Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind. While it only appears briefly, this massive winged centipede is so iconic that I wanted to capture it in print.
For my hand drawn film positives, I experimented with different materials. Rubylith worked best for my background but wasn’t ideal for fine details. The ruby pen allowed for precision but wasn’t always opaque enough, while oil-based Sharpie initially seemed perfect—until it started flaking, ruining two film positives and costing me time.
Printing came with its own challenges. My large rectangular background required a big squeegee, making it hard to apply even pressure, so some early prints were missing corners. Registration was another issue—small deviations from my master drawing led to slight misalignments, but I liked the added sense of movement. Fabric prints were trickier due to texture and sticking, so next time, I’ll secure the fabric better.
Despite the setbacks, I’m proud of the results. I produced multiple paper and fabric editions and kept the editions open for future prints. While I wish I had more time to add colors and layers for depth, I’m very pleased with how they turned out!
